Slovak interior minister declares 2nd level of security alert

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak declared the country's security alert to be at level two as of Wednesday in connection with Tuesday's attacks in Brussels and the worsened security situation in Europe.

"Slovakia isn't confronted with an imminent threat of a terrorist attack at the moment, but it cannot be ruled out completely," stressed Kalinak.

According to Kalinak, the second level of security alert is declared when an attempted or successful crime of terrorism is committed in any EU or NATO member and if there is a likelihood of consequences of such an act for Slovakia and its citizens.

The Belgian capital was hit by several explosions on Tuesday. The blasts targeted Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station, which is near EU institutions, claiming the lives of at least 30 people.

The Belgian government has declared the highest degree of security alert there. Endit
