Samoa records 10 Zika cases

Samoa has recorded 10 confirmed Zika cases, local news website Talamua Online reported Monday.

The 10 confirmed cases are among 21 samples sent to a New Zealand laboratory in February, while another batch of samples sent in January and February to French Polynesia returned no positive results for Zika virus, said the report.

Dr. Saine Vaai, an official with Samoa's Ministry of Health, said there have also been reported cases of people from overseas who visited Samoa or came through Samoa, that tested positive for Zika virus on their return to New Zealand.

A combined drive by government ministries and agencies to spray and clean the breeding sites for mosquitoes that may carry the virus is underway in Samoa.

Symptoms of infection of the Zika virus, which is spread to humans through mosquito bites, include fever, joint pain, rash, conjunctivitis, headache and muscle pain. Endit
