Iraq exports first natural gas shipment in history

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said it exported on Sunday the first natural gas shipment in the country's history.

A gas carrier sailed Sunday noon from the southern port of Um Qasr, carrying the first shipment of about 10,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas in the shape of condensates, a ministry statement quoted spokesman Asim Jihad as saying.

The gas shipment was produced by Basra Gas Company, in collaboration with Royal Dutch Shell and Japan's Mitsubishi Corp, Jihad said without giving further details.

The country has proven reserves of 112 trillion cubic feet (3. 13 trillion cubic meters) of natural gas, and is expected to increase its natural gas exports in order to be added to its oil exports that the country has been mainly rely on with about 95 percent of its revenues.

In 2010, Iraq announced that its proven oil reserves increased to 143.1 billion barrels, from the previous estimate of 115 billion barrels. Endit
