Bolivia's nuclear research lab to meet all laws, norms: official

Xinhua, March 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The joint construction of a world-class nuclear research and development center by Bolivia and Russia will meet all the international laws and norms under the supervision of the UN atomic watchdog, the Bolivian government said on Friday.

The complex, which will be built in El Alto, a satellite city on the outskirts of La Paz, is in line with international accords, which stipulate that nuclear technology should only be used for peaceful means, Joaquin Rodriguez, Bolivia's Vice Minister of Electricity and Alternative Energy, told a press conference.

The agreements between Bolivia and Russia are within the realm of existing laws and norms, Rodriguez added.

"The entire construction and implementation process of the complex will be supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency," Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy Luis Alberto Sanchez told reporters.

Bolivia and Russia's state-controlled Roastom nuclear agency signed agreements on March 6 for the construction of a 300-million-U.S.-dollar nuclear research lab.

According to Bolivian President Evo Morales, the lab will be the largest and most modern one in Latin America.

Sanchez said it will promote scientific researches and development, raise product quality, improve food security and public healthcare in Bolivia. Endi
