Nigeria seeks IAEA help on power expansion

Xinhua, March 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian government has solicited the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the country's aspiration to generate electricity using nuclear energy.

President Muhammadu Buhari made the call on Wednesday in Abuja when he met with Yukiya Amano, the Director-General of the IAEA.

He expressed delight that the IAEA was developing a program from which Nigeria would benefit.

Buhari charged the IAEA to do more to support Nigeria in view of the long years of its association and support for the nuclear regulatory agency.

According to him, Nigeria is aspiring to start a program in the coming years that will give the country 1,000 megawatts of electricity in the first instance, to be increased to 4,000 megawatts thereafter.

Earlier, Amano said he was pleased to see that Nigeria was taking the correct steps toward safe usage of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Endit
