Over 1,000 markers added to Vietnam-Laos shared border: official

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

As many as 1,002 markers have been added to shared border between Vietnam and Laos, said a Vietnamese official on Wednesday.

Ho Xuan Son, deputy minister of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks here at a state-level closing ceremony of a project on increasing and upgrading border marker system between Vietnam and Laos.

Before the project was implemented in 2008, there had been 199 markers along Vietnam-Laos border, e-Portal of Vietnamese government (VGP) quoted Son as saying on Wednesday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the completion of the project has helped boosting the bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, economic exchanges, culture, tourism, as well as strengthening safety and security in border areas.

Visiting Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, for his part, said the project has made crucial contribution to making border line between the two countries become a peaceful, stable, and friendship one, as well as bringing happiness and prosperity to two peoples, especially those in border areas, reported VGP.

Also at the ceremony, Vietnam and Laos signed a protocol on border line and border markers as well as an agreement on regulations of on-land management of border and border gates between the two countries. Enditem
