U Htin Kyaw says his election as new Myanmar president is people's victory

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's President-elect U Htin Kyaw has said that his election as new president of Myanmar is a victory of the people, local media reported Wednesday.

"It is the victory of sister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. It is because of people's goodwill and loving kindness, I become the president. Thanks all of you," U Htin Kyaw told local media at the end of the presidential election on Tuesday.

In Tuesday's presidential election, U Htin Kyaw of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the presidential election with the highest number of votes of 360 against two other presidential candidates -- U Myint Swe (213 votes) from the military and U Henry Van Htee Yu (79 votes) from the same party, becoming the country's new president for the next five-year term.

U Myint Swe from the military and U Henry Van Htee Yu from the NLD were also elected as the first and the second vice presidents respectively.

A total of 652 MPs from the two Houses cast their votes in the Union Parliament, chaired by Speaker U Mann Win Khaing Than. Endit
