Chinese envoy calls for int'l efforts to improve security situation in Afghanistan

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The international community should make efforts to improve the security situation in Afghanistan in order to avoid a reversal of the situation, said a Chinese envoy here on Tuesday.

Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the appeal at a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.

"The international community should support Afghanistan in beefing up its capacity building in its national security forces, especially by increasing the training on counter-terrorism and border control so as to improve its capabilities in self-defense and counter-terrorism," said Liu.

Parties concerned should also formulate counter-terrorism measures to help the Afghan government to tackle challenges of terrorism, trans-boundary crimes and drug smuggling, he added.

Liu noted that efforts should also be made to support the Afghan government in improving the effectiveness of administration and strengthening its state governance.

He also said that the international community should continue to keep its assistance to Afghanistan to promote the country's economic and social development in a comprehensive manner.

At the meeting, Nicholas Haysom, UN secretary-general's special representative for Afghanistan, told the 15-nation Council that the newly formed Afghan government is facing severe tests in 2016, and it must manage its difficult transition by overcoming political, economic and security challenges.

"China has actively participated in the multi-lateral coordination group in an effort to create an enabling stable environment and help the Afghan government in working out a practicable road map for reconciliation," said Liu.

"China is ready to join all the parties in continuing to play a positive role in pushing ahead the reconciliation process in Afghanistan and contributing together to bringing about an early attainment of lasting peace and prosperity in the country," he added. Enditem
