Fighting in north Myanmar displaces 4,200 people, UN says

Xinhua, March 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Armed conflict that erupted in early February in Myanmar's northern Shan State has displaced an estimated 4,200 people, a UN spokesman, said here Monday, citing the OCHA, state authorities and local civil organizations.

"Our humanitarian colleagues are following up with local partners for more information," Stephane Dujarric said. "State authorities, local groups, the Myanmar Red Cross Society, the UN and INGOs (international non-governmental organizations) have provided relief items and services at displacement sites."

"Early recovery support will be needed to help some returning families rebuild their homes and livelihoods once the security situation allows," he added.

Recent fighting between ethnic armed groups of the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army-South (RCSS/SSA-S) and Ta'ng National Liberation Army (TNLA) has forced about 1,500 villagers to flee their homes and village school has been shut down temporarily. Endit
