UAE fighter jet crashed in Yemen, 2 pilots killed

Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) fighter jet reported missing early Monday has been confirmed to have crashed, killing both pilots on board, media reports said.

The Riyadh-based command of a Saudi-led Arab coalition against Houthi rebels in Yemen said the two UAE pilots died at dawn Monday when their Mirage aircraft went down in Yemen due to "technical malfunction," official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

"The Command of Coalition Forces to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen announced the martyrdom of two pilots of the United Arab Emirates Air Forces at dawn today after their Mirage aircraft crashed in Yemeni territories as a result of a technical malfunction," SPA said in a short dispatch on its English wire.

No other details were provided about the crash.

Earlier in the day, UAE state news agency WAM reported that a military aircraft went missing in Yemen, citing the UAE Supreme Command of the Armed Forces in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE is part of a Saudi-led military coalition fighting Houth rebels to restore the administration of internationally recognized President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Endit
