Azerbaijani border guards kill 5 trespassing suspects

Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Azerbaijani border guards killed five armed trespassers in a gunfight at the Azerbaijan-Iran border area, State Border Service of Azerbaijan said on Sunday.

Gunfight broke out early Sunday when an armed group consisting of eight-10 persons was illegally crossing the border from the Iranian side, the border authority said in a statement.

The trespassers ignored "repeated orders" to stop and the Azerbaijani border guards fired warning shots near the frontier post at Dashkend village of Azerbaijan's Yardimly region, located 286 km east of Baku, it said.

Five trespassers were killed and another two suspects detained in the shooting between the border patrols and the armed group, it said. No casualties were reported from the border guards.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the armed group included Bangladesh nationals.

Azerbaijan shares 765 km border with Iran to the south. Enditem
