3 killed in heavy rains in southern U.S. states

Xinhua, March 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three people were killed and thousands of others were left homeless as heavy rains hit several southern U.S. states over the past few days, local media reported Thursday.

In Louisiana, a 63-year-old man was killed after his car was swept off a flooded road. A 22-year-old man and a six-year-old girl have also been confirmed dead during two days of severe weather, which has left roads covered in water and sent more than 1,000 people fleeing their homes.

Heavy rains also pummeled Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas with the closure of some schools and roads.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service received reports of 10-15 inches (25-38 cm) of rain in northeastern Texas, parts of Arkansas and Louisiana over a day and a half.

Torrential rains could continue in the days to come, they warned. Endi
