Fish "fall from the sky" in outback Australia

Xinhua, March 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

A family from the Australian state of Queensland were surprised when they saw fish flapping on the ground, AAP reported on Friday.

Tahnee Oakhill recorded footage of her family finding small fish at their remote cattle station in outback Queensland.

"My husband called us outside and I said, 'You've got to be joking'," she said.

"Then we spotted them just laying in the dirt and flip-flopping.

"We reckon they must have come from the sky. There are no creeks or no gullies around."

Oakhill believed the minute fish to be perch.

The area had received 120mm of rain on Wednesday, the Queensland state town of Winton's wettest March day since 1994.

Ecologist Dr Peter Unmack from the University of Canberra told the ABC it was unlikely the fish had fallen from the sky.

"This is the most widespread fish across Australia, almost anywhere there's water in northern Australia you can find this fish," Unmack said.

"In central Australia it's ubiquitous, it's pretty much everywhere and they are amazing dispersers,"he said.

"It is theoretically possible but it's difficult to see many situations where fish get picked up by strong winds and can survive." Endit
