Two candidates excluded from Peru's presidential elections

Xinhua, March 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Peruvian electoral authorities on Wednesday barred two candidates from the country's April 10 presidential election, after ruling that they committed electoral fraud.

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) concluded that Julio Guzman, leader of the All For Peru Party, had improperly registered his presidential ticket and had not met the country's electoral norms.

Guzman, currently ranked second in polls with 16.6 percent of votes, is also being investigated by the Peruvian authorities as his party allegedly violated the electoral law when nominating its candidates for internal elections.

Meanwhile, the JNE ruled that Cesar Acuna, from the Alliance for Progress Party, had violated electoral norms by giving gifts to voters.

Both parties are outraged by the JNE's decision, which they say was based on lies. They lodged an appeal last week against the first ruling, but Wednesday's final ruling did not go their way.

In response, Guzman issued a statement, saying he would keep campaigning. Endi
