Balkan route closed, no migrant enters Croatia: PM

There was no single migrant entering Croatia on Wednesday after the Balkan migrant route was closed, Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said.

It was positive for Croatia and the region and was also more humane for refugees, he said at a news conference held after the countries along the route began to apply tighter measures.

Slovenia decided on Tuesday midnight not to allow any migrant who does not request asylum to pass through the country.

Slovenia's move has created a domino effect from Croatia via Serbia to Macedonia, he added.

At the European Union summit on Monday, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria had advocated for the closure of the Balkan migrant route, he said.

On Wednesday in Zagreb, some peace activists protested against closing the Balkan migrant route, claiming it violated the rights of refugees and will revive people-smuggling, according to the local media reports.

More than one million migrants have entered the West Europe through Balkan migrant route over the past few months. Enditem
