Consumer complaints surge 11 pct in 2015

Nearly 1.3 million complaints were lodged with China's consumer rights watchdogs in 2015, up 11.1 percent year on year, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) said on Wednesday.

Mobile phones continued to have the highest complaint rate. A total of 122,800 cellphone-related complaints were filed in 2015, up 9.7 percent from the previous year, according to a statement posted on the SAIC website.

Most of these complaints concerned cellphone breakdowns and customer service. Fake and refurbished phones also featured prominently.

A total of 75,700 car-related complaints were lodged, nearly 40 percent more than in 2014, according to the statement.

With recent years' boom in e-commerce having created fertile ground for fraud, consumers filed 145,800 complaints relating to online shopping last year. This was almost double the figure in 2014.

SAIC chief Zhang Mao said in December that the country will work to improve consumer rights protection in 2016 to encourage the consumption that is expected to become a new economic engine. Endi
