Fiji has congratulated Mauritius on the commemoration of its upcoming 48th independence anniversary, the Fijian government announced Wednesday.

In a congratulatory message to Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama highlighted Mauritius' achievements in recent years as well as its ties with Fiji, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

"Your development as a nation and achievements as an island state serve as an inspiration to many. The bond of cooperation between our two countries during our 13 years of formal diplomatic relations is strong and will continue to develop and grow in the years ahead," Bainimarama said.

"I wish you and the people of your country continued prosperity and happiness," the Fijian prime minister added.

Mauritius gained independence from British rule on March 12, 1968. Enditem
