Indonesia gov't to finance village electrification program this year

Xinhua, March 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indonesian government has drafted a financing scheme to fund the newly-introduced Indonesia Lighting Up Program, which aimed at providing electricity to villages in remote areas across the nation.

The program would ultimately fueled by renewable power generations, planned to be constructed in the designated areas.

Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman said that investors won't invest in constructing power plants in remote areas because it is not economical.

"That's why state presence was necessary to bridge the gap, by providing schemes consisted of 'feed in tariff' and price subsidy," the minister said in a statement released Tuesday.

According to the minister, the initial allocation for the program was set at 10 percent from the existing subsidy allocation. He expected that the allocation can be disbursed this year.

The minister noted that 12,659 of a total 74,754 villages across the country have yet to be supplied by electricity. About 65 percent of those without electricity were located in six provinces in eastern Indonesian region.

According to the minister, villages prioritized in the program were those located around border areas.

The program was highly expected to stimulate economy activities in rural areas that would eventually affect local and regional economies, improve society and regional governments' incomes. Endit
