Palestinian woman shot dead for attack at Israeli police

Xinhua, March 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian woman was shot dead Tuesday by Israeli police after she allegedly pulled a knife at a police force in East Jerusalem, Israeli officials said.

No Israelis were injured in the incident occurred in Jerusalem's Old City, as police were beefing up security around the city a few hours ahead of a visit by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri identified the woman as 51, from Umm Tuba, a neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

Samri said the assailant approached a force of Border Police officers, pulling out a knife from her handbag and tried to stab them.

The incident was the latest in a six-month-long of Palestinian unrest, including frequent stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming attacks in Israel and the occupied West Bank. At least 175 Palestinians and 28 Israelis have been killed since October.

Israel has been accusing the Palestinian Authority of fueling the violence with "incitement" against Israel while the Palestinians say it is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of their lands. Endit
