The "early trends" of Benin's presidential election are expected on Monday afternoon, according to the country's electoral body.

"If things go well, the first trends of this election can be provided this Monday afternoon," the chairman of the National Autonomous Election Commission, Emmanuel Tiando, told Xinhua.

Votes are being counted to determine the successor of outgoing President Boni Yayi, whose second term ends on April 6.

Thirty-three candidates are contesting the presidency, including former Prime Minister, Makandjou Pascal Koupaki, and current Prime Minister, Lionel Zinsou, who is backed by Yayi. Endit
