Conflicting reports on Syria opposition's presence at Geneva peace talks

Xinhua, March 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

There have been conflicting reports on Monday about whether the Syrian opposition's Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC) would participate in the upcoming round of the inter-Syrian talks in Geneva.

Riyad Nasa'an Agha, an HMC member, told western media outlets that the HNC would attend the Geneva talks scheduled to start later this week.

However, the Riyadh-based HNC spokesman, Salem al-Muslet, said there was no final decision about the group's participation in the talks, according to Al Arabiya.

Observers say the Syrian opposition has shown conflicting stances since the beginning of the crisis, failing yet to form a reliable body that could face the administration of President Bashar al-Assad.

The previous round of talks ended last month with no tangible results, but intensified international efforts have managed to establish a cessation of hostilities in Syria that significantly facilitated access to humanitarian supplies.

The cessation of hostilities has been holding over the past 10 days with no notable violations, something that could be built on for the upcoming talks in Geneva. Endit
