Turkish soldier killed in clashes with PKK

Xinhua, March 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Turkish soldier was killed early Monday by militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the southeastern Diyarbakir province, authorities said.

The soldier was seriously wounded in an armed assault by PKK militants in Sur district of Diyarbakir province and died later of his injuries, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on its website.

Since last July, 219 members of Turkey's security forces have been killed in counter-terrorism operations, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz told lawmakers on Saturday.

At least 1,250 PKK militants have been killed during the same period, Turkish Daily News reported, citing numbers compiled from the data provided by security sources.

Turkey's southeast region has seen the worst violence in two decades since a cease-fire between the government and the PKK collapsed last July.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
