Australian man partially blinded after chlorine attack

Xinhua, March 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Australian man has sustained permanent damage to his eyesight after his neighbour allegedly poured an amount of liquid chlorine over his fence.

The man was playing with his daughter on a trampoline in his backyard in Sydney before the incident took place.

Police believe there had been a dispute between the man and the neighbour involved.

The 45-year-old man was set upon in the Sydney suburb of North Bondi Sunday afternoon, with the incident described as deliberate by police.

A 31-year-old man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm by the use of corrosive fluid and malicious damage.

He was granted strict conditional bail and will appear in court on March 30.

"When it's diluted appropriately in a pool, chlorine is safe and important for hygiene," an Australian Medical Association (AMA) spokesperson said.

"However, undiluted chlorine is poisonous and can cause chemical burns if it comes into direct contact with skin or eyes." Endit
