DeMar DeRozan of Toronto Raptors scored a season-high 38 points, including a franchise-best 24 free throws in the team's 117-115 win over Portland Trailblazers in NBA action on Friday evening.
In a game that saw 65 foul calls between the two teams and a total of 89 free throws attempted, Raptors set franchise records with 43 made and 54 attempted, surpassing the previous records of 41 made in 49 attempts on Nov. 20 against Milwaukee.
"It was a free throw fest. I thought both teams were forcing the issue," said Raptors head coach Dwane Casey following the win. "I was really proud of DeMar playing through contact and going the way the officials were calling it."
DeRozan would finish with more than half of Toronto's free throw made, sinking his first 24 free throws before missing his final one attempt in the dying seconds to finish 24-for-25 for the game.
Prior to missing his final free throw, DeRozan momentarily held the NBA record for free throws made in a game without a miss, surpassing the record of 23 held by Dominique Wilkins in December 1992.
"I had no clue (of the record)," said DeRozan following the game in Toronto. "It was one of the fun games to be a part of. I was just taking what they (the officials) were giving me. I wasn't trying to force anything."
Instead of being in the all-time record books, DeRozan's missed final free throw keeps Wilkins atop the category. DeRozan does set two records; most free throws made in a single game this season and most free throws made in a single game in Raptors history. Endit
