Poor Copa America cost Brazilian players

Xinhua, March 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil's poor performance in the 2015 Copa America was enough to convince coach Dunga to exclude certain players from the national side, according to Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

Brazil were eliminated on penalties at the quarter-final stage by Paraguay, and the team's disappointing performance throughout the continental competition has forced the boss to wring the changes.

Goalkeeper Jefferson, central defender and former captain Thiago Silva, midfielder Everton Ribeiro, as well as forwards Roberto Firmino, Diego Tardelli and Robinho have all seen opportunities limited since the latter half of last year.

Firmino has since ceded his place in the squad to veteran striker Ricardo Oliveira of Santos, the top scorer in last season's Brazilian league championship.

Dunga named Thursday his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay, with four changes to his final call-up of 2015.

In came goalkeepers Marcelo Grohe and Diego Alves for Cassio and Jefferson, whilst Marcelo and Elias have made way for Alex Sandro and Philippe Coutinho. Endit
