Jefferson left out of Brazil squad after irritating Dunga

Xinhua, March 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Botafogo captain and Brazil goalkeeper Jefferson was reportedly left out of the latest national squad after irritating head coach Dunga.

The boss named his 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay Thursday, selecting Alisson, Marcelo Grohe and Diego Alves, of Internacional, Gremio and Valencia respectively, as his three goalkeepers.

According to BBC, Dunga was irritated with an interview Jefferson gave to Brazilian sports television programme Bem, Amigos! on 23 November last year, when the stopper spoke about being dropped for the qualifier against Venezuela.

The following day, Vickery reportedly received information from a reliable source that Jefferson would no longer be called up for national duty, having irritated Dunga for having spoken openly about team affairs.

After being back-up to Julio Cesar at the 2014 World Cup, Jefferson became first choice following the FIFA tournament.

However, he lost his place in the team after making a mistake in the 2-0 defeat to Chile on 8 October in Santiago. Alisson played the next match five days later against Venezuela, and has continued between the sticks since. Endit
