S. African diplomat appointed to senior UN portfolio in Sudan

South African diplomat Jeremiah Mamabolo has been appointed as Deputy Joint Special Representative for the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), Sudan, it was announced on Wednesday.
The appointment was jointly announced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the UN Information Centre Pretoria (UNIC Pretoria) said.
Mamabolo, 61, succeeds Abiodun Bashua of Nigeria, to whom the Ban Ki-moon and Dlamini-Zuma are grateful for his dedicated service during his tenure with UNAMID, including his contribution as acting head of the Mission, UNIC Pretoria said in a statement.
Mamabolo brings to the position a wealth of experience from his distinguished career in the diplomatic service, said the statement.
Since 2013, Mamabolo has served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of South Africa to the UN, during which he also acted as Chair of the Group of 77 and China. In 2009, he was appointed High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria.
Previously, Mamabolo facilitated peace processes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi as South Africa's Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region (2006-2009). He also served as Deputy Director-General for African Affairs in the South African Ministry of International Relation and Cooperation (2002-2006).
UNAMID is the first joint UN/AU force and the largest peacekeeping mission.
As of December 2008, it has deployed a total of 15,136 uniformed personnel, which include 12,194 troops, 175 military observers, 2,767 police officers. Enditem
