The government of Tanzania and Uganda agreed to jointly implement a 1,120-kilometre oil pipeline project on Tuesday aimed at benefiting the two east African countries.
A statement issued on Wednesday by Tanzania's Directorate of Communications at State House said the agreement to implement the project was reached during talks between Tanzanian President John Magufuli and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni.
They made the agreement ahead of the 17th East African Community (EAC) Heads of State Summit held on Wednesday in Tanzania's northern tourist city of Arusha, said the statement.
The statement said the pipeline will be constructed from Tanzania's port city of Tanga to Uganda, a landlocked country.
President Magufuli said apart from making the pipeline construction deal, the two leaders also discussed the need for increasing trade within the EAC region, building factories and creating jobs through various productive sectors.
Magufuli also hinted that the summit was also expected to discuss the possibility of South Sudan joining the five-member EAC regional bloc. EAC members are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
He said the joining of South Sudan to the EAC bloc will boost the region's trade that will benefit about 150 million people.
President Museveni congratulated President Magufuli for what he described as a sound leadership performance. Endit
