S-400 air defense system to assume combat duty in Western Siberia

Xinhua, March 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

An anti-aircraft defense system S-400 "Triumf" from the Central Military District assumed combat duty in Western Siberia, the district's press service reported Tuesday.

It didn't report the number of weapons systems.

Five air defense regiments will be rearmed with advanced S-400 Triumf air defense systems in 2016, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov said on television in late January.

The S-400 Triumf is the newest long-range anti-aircraft missile system, which went into service in 2007.

It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground objectives.

The S-400 Triumf can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km. Endi
