Brazil starts construction of new Antarctic base

Xinhua, March 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil starts the construction of a new, bigger Antarctic base, four years after a fire destroyed its Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, the Agencia Brasil news agency said Monday.

The new base will be built at the same place as the old one, in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Construction work has already started and are being carried out by China National Electronics Imports and Exports Corporation (CEIEC), which is on a public bidding process to build the station with a cost of about 99.6 million U.S. dollars.

The first Brazilian Antarctic station began operating in 1984. Various research has been carried out by scientists there. On Feb. 25, 2012, the base was completely destroyed by a fire, which caused the deaths of two soldiers. Since then, Brazilian scientists have used temporary locations to continue their research. Endi
