We should never underestimate our opponents, says coach Menezes

Xinhua, February 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chinese Super League (CSL) side Shandong Luneng head coach Mano Menezes warned his players not to underestimate their rivals as the CSL powerhouse will play against Thai winners Buriram United F.C. in the second round of the 2016 Asian Champions League (ACL) at home on Tuesday.

Buriram United suffered a 6-0 loss to Seoul FC at home in the opening round of the season. However, Buriram United kept an unbeaten record in two matches against Luneng in 2014.

"Though Buriram United miss two experienced players, Luneng still have no reason to get too optimistic," Menezes said at the pre-match news briefing, adding that Buriram United's loss was probably an accident.

It is Luneng's eighth AFC Champions League appearance. Their best performance was moving into the quarter-finals in 2005.

Menezes led Luneng to a three-match winning streak after he took the helm of the squad in December 2015, including two victories from ACL qualifiers with the latest against Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

"The fans want to see attacking football, but football should take offensive and defensive as a whole. We are a team," Menezes said of his football philosophy.

Alexandre Gama, coach of Buriram United, said he would adjust his starters and tactics to play with Luneng. Endit
