Xinhua, February 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Following the declaration of the total tally of the first round of Niger's presidential elections, 23 opposition parties under the alliance dubbed Convergence for Change in Niger in 2016 (COPA 2016) have decided to support Hama Amadou in the second round.

In a statement issued in Niamey, the parties decided to uphold their pre-election agreement to support one of their own, in this case Amadou who came second in the first round.

Amadou came second with 17.7 percent of the votes cast in the first round, behind incumbent President Mahamadou Issoufou who got 48.4 percent of the votes.

Since November last year, Amadou who is a former speaker, has been in detention on suspicion of child trafficking.

Elsewhere, the opposition called on the government to release Amadou so that he can carry out his political campaigns. Endit
