3 killed, 9 wounded in stone quarry mine blast in India's Uttar Pradesh

Xinhua, February 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least three laborers were killed and nine others wounded Friday in a mine blast inside a stone quarry in north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The blast took place at Billi stone quarry Sonbhadra district about 366 km south of Lucknow city, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

"A blast took place today inside a stone quarry, which resulted in killing of three labourers, besides wounding nine others," an official posted in the district said.

India's official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) quoted Sonbhadra police superintendent R L Varma, saying among the nine wounded, the condition of four was stated to be critical.

Police officials said the blast occurred when more than a dozen laborers were working in Billi stone quarry.

Labor organizations said the laborers working in stone quarries across India often compromise with the safety measures. Endit
