AU forces kill 10 Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia

Xinhua, February 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), supported by the Somali troops, killed at least ten Al-Shabaab militants and injured 20 others Friday near Somalia's southwestern town of Hudur, said a local official.

Adam Abdi Abori, Deputy Governor of Hudur town, capital of Bakol region, said the joint forces conducted an operation against the Al-Qaida linked militant group.

"Ten Al-Shabaab militants were killed; 20 others wounded and several others arrested," Abori said.

He said the security operation was still underway to rid off the town of the militants.

"The militants have made life difficult for the residents as they block avenues or roads for reaching out to poor people in remote villages and major towns in terms of provision of humanitarian support," Abori added.

The AU forces have been supporting Somali government since early 2007, and has in the past years made major gains against Al-Shabaab. However, the Islamic militants are still staging series of attacks, including those in the capital Mogadishu. Endit
