Obama, Italian PM discuss fighting against Islamic State

Xinhua, February 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

U.S. President Barack Obama and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi discussed by phone on Thursday their join effort in combating the Islamic State (IS), the White House said.

"The two leaders agreed to continue to work together to manage the flow of migrants into Europe," White House said in a press release.

"The road ahead will not be easy but our coalition continues to grow stronger, the ISIL (another acronym for IS) core in Syria and Iraq continues to shrink, with allies and partners...we will destroy this barbaric terrorist organization," Obama told reporters after a meeting with the National Security Council at the State Department earlier on Thursday.

Italy is in the U.S.-led anti-IS coalition.

Obama and Renzi also discussed "the economic situation in Europe and the need to promote growth," according to the press release. Endi
