Brazil, Mexico sign agreement to protect typical beverages

Xinhua, February 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil and Mexico announced on Tuesday the conclusion of an agreement on mutual protection of their typical beverages, respectively cachaca and tequila.

Under the terms of the agreement, only Brazilian cachaca can be sold in Mexico, and only Mexican tequila can be sold in Brazil. A work group will oversee the implementation of the agreement and deal with cases of violations.

The two countries started the negotiation in May 2015, when Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff travelled to Mexico on an official visit. The talks were finished this week.

The agreement is an important part of the process to boost the bilateral relations, said Armando Monteiro, Brazilian minister of development, industry and trade, adding that "We have a priority relationship with Mexico."

In 2015, Mexico sold tequila worth 8 million U.S dollars to Brazil, while Brazil's cachaca export to Mexico just reached 65,500 dollars. Endi
