451 Belgians identified as foreign fighters in Syria: interior minister

A total of 451 Belgians have travelled to Syria to fight or have attempted to do so, while 117 of them have returned to Belgium, a newspaper quoted Belgian interior minister Jan Jambon as saying on Tuesday.

According to the Le Soir newspaper report, 269 Belgians are currently engaged in conflict in Syria, six are currently en route, 117 have returned and 59 were stopped before they could make their journey.

The figures are up to date by the end of January.

Of the 451 fighters identified by the interior ministry, 197 were from the Brussels region and another 105 from Antwerp province in the north of the country, Le Soir added. Enditem
