Albania's population falls for 16th consecutive year

Albania's population has kept declining for 16 years in a row, showed the latest figures from the Albanian Institute of Statistics.

On Jan. 1, 2016, the population was 2,886,026 inhabitants, down 6,276 compared to that of last year. In 2001 the number was 3,063,320, when the population first dropped.

The number of births in Albania for 2015 was 33,221, of which 17,365 were males and 15,856 females. The sex ratio at birth for 2015 was 109.5 males for every 100 females.

Districts with the highest populations in Albania are Tirana with 811,649, or 28.1 percent, followed by Fier with 312,488, or 10.8 percent, and Elbasan with 298,913, or 10.4 percent.

Districts with the lowest populations in the country are Gjirokastra, Kukes and Dibra, with 70,331, 84,035 and 134,153 inhabitants respectively.

Tirana registered the largest population growth, at 1.36 percent, while the district with the biggest population decline was Gjirokastra, at 2.57 percent. Endi
