5.4-magnitude quake hits Morocco, no casualties

Xinhua, February 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake on Monday struck Morocco's northeastern cities of Nador and Hoceima, causing panic among local residents.

No casualties have been reported, according to the local media.

The quake was followed by 4.4 and 3.9-magnitude tremors, the Moroccan National Institute of Geophysics said in a statement.

Nador and Hoceima have witnessed numerous quakes since January, with the strongest, at 6.3-magnitude, injuring 15 people on Jan. 25.

The previous major quake, also at 6.3-magnitude, struck Hoceima in 2004, killing hundreds of people and leaving thousands others homeless. Endit
