Clash continues in Afghan southern Sangin district

Xinhua, February 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Fierce fighting has been continuing between government forces and Taliban militants for the control of the troubled Sangin district in Afghan southern Helmand province, provincial governor Mirza Khan Rahimi said Monday.

"The security forces have been pushing hard to wipe out all militants and ensure lasting peace in Sangin district," Rahimi told Xinhua.

However, the governor declined to comment on possible casualties, saying cleanup operation has been continuing in the area.

The government forces, he said, would launch cleanup operations in Khanshin district after restoring law and order in Sangin to sweep out insurgents.

Taliban militants, who have been challenging the government in several districts of the volatile Helmand province haven't commented. Enditem
