1st LD: Several bombings rock Shiite district in Damascus

Several bombings rocked a predominantly-Shiite district south of the capital Damascus Sunday, leaving an known number of casualties, state TV said.

Three bombings rocked Sayyidah Zaynab district in the southern countryside of Damascus, said the TV, adding that the explosions hit near the al-Sader Hospital in the Teen Street in that sprawling district.

Meanwhile, a source told Xinhua that five explosions rocked Sayyidah Zaynab, where a key Shiite shrine with a tomb of Zaynab, the granddaughter of Islam Prophet Muhammad, is located.

The bombings are the latest in a spade of explosions that shook the district, which is said to be guarded by fighters of the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

Last month, at least 45 people were killed and 100 others wounded when two explosions rocked that Shiite district.

The Sayyidah Zaynab tomb became a center of religious studies of the adherents of the Shiite sect of Islam and a destination of mass pilgrimage by Shiite Muslims from across the Muslim world. Enditem
