A Cambodian court on Thursday convicted a Mexican man of sexually abusing two underage girls and sentenced him to two years in prison with one year of that suspended, an anti-pedophile NGO Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE) said.
The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court "also ordered the convict, Pina Paez Bernado, 60, to pay 10 million riel (2,500 U.S. dollars) compensation to two plaintiffs, and ordered his deportation after completing his sentence", the anti-pedophile agency said in a statement, citing a verdict.
It said the two victim aged 12 and 16.
With assistance from APLE, police arrested Bernado in June last year after sufficient evidence was collected. His victims were sent to aftercare facility where they received all the necessary support.
Cambodia launched an anti-pedophile operation in 2003 in a bid to end its reputation as a haven for child sex offenders. Since then, dozens of foreigners have been imprisoned for child sex crimes. Enditem
