Rare diseases organization launched in Malta

The first ever organization to support people suffering from rare diseases was launched on Wednesday by Michelle Muscat, the wife of the prime minister and chairperson of the Marigold Foundation.

Muscat introduced that the National Alliance for Rare Diseases Support Malta, a new addition to the Marigold Foundation which has been operating since 2014, will offer support and provide information to people suffering from rare diseases and their families, and help raise awareness and encourage further research.

There are around 600 different rare diseases in Malta. People suffering from rare diseases face lot of adversities, chief among them is the time it takes to make a full diagnosis, and finding a cure. Medication is also too expensive and unaffordable or sometimes not available.

Muscat noted there were already a number of individual entities in Malta working with people with rare diseases. In this regard, this national alliance will take a central role in helping these organizations take their cause to a higher level and provide a network for patients to get the necessary support. Endit
