Albania changes finance minister

Xinhua, February 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama replaced Finance Minister Shkelqim Cani on Tuesday with a former economy minister, due to Cani's failure to reduce the country's debts and his frequent altercations with the PM.

Cani is widely credited for stabilizing the Albanian economy since his appointment as the finance minister in September 2013, but failed to meet tax collection targets.

During his time in office, the country's debts rose from 62 percent of the gross domestic product to the current 73 percent.

Sources from Albanian Socialist Party told local media that there were frequent arguments between Cani and Rama in regard to the country's finances.

Cani will keep his parliamentary seat in the ruling left-wing Socialist Party and remain a member of the Committee of Economy and Finance.

Cani's successor, former Economy Minister Arben Ahmetaj, was replaced by Milva Ekonomi, former deputy health minister, at his previous position at the Ministry of Economy, Tourism, Trade and Enterprise. Endi
