Turkish soldier killed in clashes with PKK

Xinhua, February 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

A soldier was killed and two others wounded in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Diyarbakir province, a statement from the Turkish General Staff said Wednesday.

According to a statement, one soldier was heavily wounded and died later in a hospital, while two others sustained light wounds in an operation carried out against PKK militants in Sur on Tuesday. The statement added a PKK militant was also killed during the operation.

Turkey has recently stepped up efforts to fight militants in the southeast, specifically with ground operations targeting the PKK.

Local governors have imposed curfews in several towns in the country's east and southeast to remove militants from the area.

Cizre and Silopi, two districts in the southeastern province of Sirnak, and Sur, the district of Diyarbakir, have been experiencing round-the-clock or partial curfews since early December 2015.

Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Alas told local Anadolu news agency on Sunday that the operations targeting the PKK would continue. Endit
