Senegalese president not to reduce his term from 7 to 5 years

Xinhua, February 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Senegalese President Macky Sall said Tuesday in a televised message that his current term will not be reduced from seven to five years, and it will end in 2019.

The decision is based on an opinion of the Senegalese Constitutional Council which noted that the reduction of presidential term, as proposed in the referendum that had been called by Sall, "neither conforms to the spirit of the Constitution, nor is it practical."

The president went to the Constitutional Council to get interpretation of his proposal to reduce his current term, through a referendum, and institute a five-year presidential term in Senegal.

The referendum had been scheduled for March 20, the president said, adding that the decisions of the Constitutional Council cannot be appealed and have to be respected by all judicial and administrative authorities. Endit
