Brunei needs more waste recycling centers: official

Xinhua, February 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

More recycling centers are needed to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills, said the acting director of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation.

There are only 10 recycling companies that are registered with the department, local media Tuesday quoted Hj Shaharuddin Khairul as saying.

More recycling centers can reduce the waste and stretch the life span of landfills in Brunei, the director said.

It was previously reported that there were six landfills in 2014. Sg Paku landfill, which can last up to 20 years, collects an average of 450 tonnes of rubbish per day, with 350 tonnes coming from downtown Brunei-Muara district.

"There is plenty of recyclable waste that can be reused as raw materials such as plastic and paper," the director said.

"(Therefore) the more recycling centers there are, the better. The only question is whether there is someone out there willing to take the challenge in collecting recyclable waste in Brunei."

An environmental officer from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, who did not want to be named, said more recycling centers can help increase public awareness on the importance of recycling.

More recycling centers would also help the department achieve its aim of increasing the country's recycling rate to up to 15 percent by the year 2020, he added. Enditem
