Laos names list of candidates for March 20 legislative election

Laos on Monday afternoon announced here candidates approved to stand for legislative elections as the South-East Asian nation prepares for March 20 polls to elect its national and provincial parliamentary representatives.

The announcement made by the country's National Election Commission will see the named candidates, which include 50 women, seeking five-year terms for 149 seats in the National Assembly, the country's unicameral legislature.

The move comes following the approval of a constitutional amendment in December 2015 to strengthen national and newly-established provincial level assemblies' legislative oversight of the country's executive government and the public sector amid action to tighten expenditure and combat revenue leakages in the face of structural budget shortfalls.

According to the country's constitution, Lao citizens of all ethnic groups aged 21 years or above, regardless of their gender, social status, profession or religion are eligible for election as NA and PA members.

Approved candidates are members of, or approved by the country's ruling Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP). Enditem
