Three suspected jihadists detained in northern Greece

Xinhua, February 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three men of Iraqi origin holding British passports have been detained in northern Greece near the border with Turkey as suspects with potential links to jihadist groups, local media reported Sunday.

Greek coastguard officials detained the first two young men after discovering more than a dozen guns and ammunition in their trailer at the port of Alexandroupolis Saturday night, according to local news web portal "in.gr," which cited national intelligence sources.

The third man was detained near the border crossing after police found documents with his name in the trailer, according to the report.

An official announcement by Greek police was due later on Sunday, as Greek authorities were in contact with other European authorities to crosscheck whether their names were on lists of wanted persons and to trace the start of their journey, stopovers and final destination.

Greek counter-terrorism officials suspect that their intention was to reach Syria through Turkey.

Three weeks ago, Greek police arrested two suspected jihadists holding Swedish passports in the same region. Endi
