Trooper killed, 3 others wounded in gunfight with militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Indian military trooper was killed and three others wounded on Saturday in an ongoing gunfight with militants in the restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out Friday at Chowkibal in frontier district of Kupwara, close to the Line of Control (LoC), about 125 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Four trooper, two of them critically, were wounded fighting militants in an overnight gunfight at Chowkibal in Kupwara," a senior police officer Gareed Das told Xinhua. "Of the two critically wounded personnel one succumbed, while as another one is under treatment. The other two troopers are also admitted in hospital and are stable."

So far, there was no news about damage to militants in the stand-off.

According to Das, at least three militants were believed to be in the area.

"The operation is going on and the area has been completely sealed to prevent militants from fleeing away," he said.

Officials said troops cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.

Last week three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit were killed in the region. Endit
